The Nation’s Capitol Under Siege
Abraham Lincoln said it best, “a house divided against itself cannot stand.”
Atlanta, GA, January 18, 2021 – Wednesday, January 6, 2021 is now written in the books of American History. It is a day that will be remembered by all for generations to come. The riot in our nation’s Capital demonstrated a nation truly divided.
The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. (NCBW) condemns the acts of violence and destruction that occurred at the Capitol building. We as a people may disagree on policy and who we support for President, but this country is built on law and order. We must continue to stand for the great American tradition of peaceful disagreement and debate rather than anarchy and violence.
Citizens across the United States have legitimate concerns and need unbiased answers to several questions regarding the events of January 6, 2021, such as:
• The permit to hold the rally that turned into a mob was given to an organization called “Women for America First,” but the question is, who were the individuals and groups that planned and promoted that rally?
• Why did law enforcement ignore the rhetoric on social media channels that proclaimed the coming “Storm on the Capitol” mob action?
• How will the politicians, including eight State attorneys general, who reportedly participated in the mob, be held accountable for their actions?
• Why were the Capitol police so woefully underprepared? And why were some of them clearly complicit in this criminal behavior, even to the point of taking selfies with the rioters and looters and removing barricades to let them through instead of holding them back?
• How will the politicians and the police who for years have aided and abetted the President’s white supremacist and seditious rhetoric be held accountable? How will the President be held accountable for his words and actions that spurred this insurrection
• And finally, the critical question that should be on the minds of leaders across the country: What will be done to ensure this will never happen again? Confidence in the leadership of the United States must be rebuilt.
Through advocacy, NCBW works as a change agent to influence policies that promote gender equity in health, education, and economic empowerment. We have 61 chapters across 28 states with over 3300 members. We believe through our efforts we will fulfill our vision of seeing black women and girls living in a world where socio-economic inequity does not exist.
