COVID-19 Update: Do You Qualify For $1,200?
Friend,
Just last week, the Senate passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Though far from perfect, I voted for it because workers, small businesses, and healthcare providers need help right now. It will help slow the spread of the coronavirus and support families on the brink of financial ruin. Some of you may have heard that this bill will also provide a payment of $1,200 to qualifying individuals. You can find out if you qualify for the payment here.
But let’s be clear: a one-time $1,200 payment is nowhere near enough. Countless Californians have just lost their jobs, and small businesses are worried about how they’re going to keep the lights on. That’s why I sent a letter to the Treasury Department demanding it expedite the $1,200 direct payments. People need this money in their pockets now.
Though we passed this historic legislation, Congress’ job is nowhere close to being finished. I’m already working with my colleagues on the next steps because we have so much more to do to provide assistance to families and small businesses, expand paid leave, protect homeowners and renters, and more.
I’m proud to see that my home state of California has launched a new website where constituents can find the most up-to-date information on our state’s efforts to combat the coronavirus, including resources to apply for unemployment, disability benefits, and paid family leave. It’s critical that everyone stays informed about the coronavirus and what you can do to protect yourself from it. If you have any questions, please be sure to speak with your healthcare provider and click here to visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s website.
One thing’s for sure, I won’t stop fighting to ensure you have all the support you need.
I know people are hurting right now, I know we are stretched thin, but we will get through this – together.
Take care,
Kamala
