The National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc. Pays Tribute
to the Enduring Legacy of Former First Lady Rosalynn Carter
Atlanta, Georgia, November 20, 2023 – The National Coalition of 100 Black Women Incorporated (NCBW), mourns the passing of former first lady Rosalynn Carter. The first lady was a remarkable and powerful woman. The Georgia native was also a strong force in her husband President Jimmy Carter’s life and was his most ardent advisor on many of the issues facing our nation during and after his presidency.
Staff in our NCBW corporate office in Atlanta and five Georgia chapters, cherished a meaningful connection with Mrs. Carter, particularly in advocating for issues affecting Black women, notably the Equal Rights Amendment.
While NCBW continues to engage in open conversations about mental health issues as it relates to Black women and girls, Mrs. Carter was a mental health activist, who worked with unyielding commitment, as the honorary chairperson of President Carter’s Commission on Mental Health, directing efforts that later contributed to the passage of the 1980 Mental Health Systems Act.
Just as NCBW’s advocating efforts empowers, uplifts, and creates lasting change in our communities, Mrs. Carter focused national attention on the performing arts and took a strong interest in programs to aid local communities and the elderly.
“Mrs. Carter was a woman characterized by poise and elegance. She was dedicated to global harmony and the advocacy of human rights. President Carter and the entire Carter family are in our prayers. NCBW stands with our nation in honoring the life and legacy of this exemplary humanitarian,” said National President Virginia W. Harris.
