Honoring Our History. Advancing Our Future.

Honoring Our History. Advancing Our Future.

Statement

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

Primary: 404-390-3982

As we mark the 100th anniversary of the first Black History celebration in America, I am reminded that Black History Month is not simply about looking back, it is about understanding what this history requires of us today. For the National Coalition of 100 Black Women, Inc., this moment is both a time of reflection and a call to action.

Black history is not confined to a single month or moment. It is the lived experience of Black men, women, and children who pressed forward through courage, sacrifice, and resilience, often without recognition, but always with purpose. We honor them not only by telling their stories, but by how we live out their legacy in our leadership, our advocacy, and our service every day of the year.

NCBW was built on the strength of Black women who understood that progress does not happen by chance. It requires discipline, courage, and sustained commitment. Our founders organized with intention and impact, protecting the integrity of the work so future generations could stand on firmer ground. Their example reminds us that true leadership is measured not by visibility, but by results, and by the lives we help shape along the way. Today, we are the stewards of that legacy.

Black history lives in our actions, in how we advocate for equitable policies, cultivate inclusive workplaces, and expand equitable opportunities so Black women, girls, and families can reach their full potential. It lives in how we mentor and protect one another, strengthen economic opportunity, and commit to continued learning that empowers individuals and communities alike. And it lives in how we lead, with unity, accountability, and excellence, knowing that every decision we make either strengthens or weakens what has been entrusted to us.

This Black History Month, I ask each of us to move beyond reflection and recommit to responsibility, responsibility to our mission, to one another, and to the generations of Black women and girls who are watching, learning, and depending on us to lead with courage, clarity, and care.

Let us honor our history not only by remembering it, but by advancing it, with integrity, intention, and resolve.

With purpose and resolve,

Virginia W. Harris
